What to Expect in Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

What to Expect in Dialectical Behavior Therapy?

“Dialectical” when two seemingly conflicting things are true at the same time.

If you’ve been having trouble managing overwhelming negative emotions and/or lots of conflict in relationships, then Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) might be right for you.

What happens in DBT Therapy?

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy, we use worksheets, handouts, and interpersonal reflection to help you gain a better understanding of your thoughts and feelings that influence your behaviors.

Since it is a type of cognitive behavior therapy, it is commonly used to treat lots of disorders, like phobias, addictions, depression, and anxiety. It teaches people how to be present, manage stress, manage emotions, and improve relationships. DBT is also useful for managing self-destructive behaviors.

4 Modules used in DBT:

Mindfulness:

DBT focuses on improving an individual's ability to accept and be present in the current moment. Awareness of what you feel and what changes your state is very important to knowing your thoughts and emotions.

Distress Tolerance:

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy you can expect to move toward increasing your tolerance of negative emotions and stressful situations, instead of avoiding them.

Emotion Regulation:

DBT offers ways to manage and direct intense emotions that are causing problems in a person’s life.

Interpersonal Effectiveness:

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy you’ll learn ways of communicating with others in a way that is assertive while maintaining self-respect and strengthening relationships.

What can I expect from DBT?

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy, no matter how powerful the emotions you feel there will be a way to manage and regulate them so that you come out better as a person. You can expect a better ability to be mindful, better tolerance to stress, regulation of emotions, and better communication in your relationships.
