OCD THERAPY THAT IN LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA THAT HONORS THE PERSON
At KDH Counseling, OCD therapy focuses on helping people break free from the exhausting cycle of obsessions, anxiety, and compulsive behaviors. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder isn’t about being “too careful” or “type-A” - it’s a condition driven by fear, doubt, and a nervous system stuck in threat mode.
Our clinicians provide evidence-based treatment for OCD using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the gold-standard approach for obsessive compulsive disorder.
WHAT OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER REALLY LOOKS LIKE
OCD can show up in many different ways, but it often includes intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that feel disturbing, unwanted, or out of character. These obsessions create intense anxiety, leading to compulsions — behaviors or mental rituals meant to reduce distress or prevent feared outcomes.
While compulsions may bring temporary relief, they ultimately reinforce the OCD cycle, making intrusive thoughts feel more powerful and persistent over time.

COMMON OCD THEMES
-
Health anxiety & somatic preoccupation
- Pedophilia OCD
If your theme isn’t listed, we can still help. OCD is a shape‑shifter, what matters is the process, not the content.
Each of these themes is treated using the same underlying principles, even though the content of the fears may differ.
HOW ERP TREATMENT HELPS BREAK THE OCD CYCLE
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based therapy that helps individuals gradually face feared thoughts, images, or situations without engaging in compulsions. Over time, the brain learns that anxiety can rise and fall on its own - and that feared outcomes do not need to be prevented through rituals or avoidance.
ERP is not about forcing exposure or “white-knuckling” distress. It is a collaborative, paced process that builds flexibility, tolerance for uncertainty, and confidence in one’s ability to respond differently to fear.
-
ERP IS NOT ABOUT GETTING RID OF THOUGHTS
One of the most common misconceptions about OCD treatment is the belief that success means eliminating intrusive thoughts altogether. In reality, ERP helps people change their relationship to thoughts - reducing the urgency to analyze, neutralize, or escape them.
Thoughts lose their power not because they disappear, but because they no longer dictate behavior.
-
OCD THERAPY FOR ADULTS, TEENS, AND CHILDREN
OCD can affect individuals across the lifespan. Our therapists work with adults, adolescents, and children, adapting ERP to developmental needs, family systems, and individual learning styles.
Treatment is always individualized, trauma-informed, and respectful of each person’s pace and lived experience.
-
WHEN OCD OVERLAPS WITH ANXIETY, TRAUMA, OR NEURODIVERGENCE
OCD rarely exists in isolation. Many individuals also experience generalized anxiety, panic, trauma, ADHD, or autistic traits. Our clinicians are experienced in navigating these overlaps, ensuring that OCD treatment remains effective without dismissing the broader context of a person’s nervous system and identity.
-
MEDICATION AND OCD-WHEN IT'S PART OF THE CONVERSATION
For some individuals, medication may be a supportive part of OCD treatment when symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning. Medication is not required for ERP to be effective, and decisions about medication are always collaborative and individualized.
When appropriate, care can be coordinated with psychiatric providers to support overall treatment goals.

FAMILY ACCOMODATION THERAPY FOR OCD
When someone you love is struggling with OCD, it’s natural to want to help by offering reassurance, adjusting routines, or stepping in to prevent anxiety. Over time, though, these well-intended patterns-called family accommodation-can accidentally strengthen OCD’s grip. Family Accommodation Therapy gives partners and family members a supportive roadmap for responding differently. Together, we help loved ones understand the OCD cycle, reduce participation in compulsions, and communicate in ways that promote confidence and recovery. This work creates a steadier home environment and supports lasting healing for everyone involved.
TAKING THE FIRST STEP TOWARD OCD TREATMENT
OCD can make it feel impossible to trust yourself, your thoughts, or your decisions. Effective treatment helps restore that trust — not by offering certainty, but by building confidence in how you respond to uncertainty.
If you’re ready to explore OCD therapy, our team is here to support you with clarity, compassion, and evidence-based care.
