How Do I Climb Out of My Depressive Hole?

How Do I Climb Out of My Depressive Hole?

Treatment for Depression

I know that it sounds so formal … TREATMENT… but depression is indeed a medical condition. We misquote the term at times by saying things like, “I’m depressed”, or “I am so depressed that my Netflix series has ended.”

This is obviously not what I am referring to. I am speaking of the perpetual “blah” that never leaves.  The sadness that is present every hour of every day. Or maybe it subsides but returns with a vengeance.

Mild, Moderate, or Severe Major Depressive Disorder

Mild

If the case is mild, you can still function, like going to work and maintaining your household responsibilities, and social obligations.

Moderate

When it is moderate it may be stopping you in your tracks; it is a wound that will not heal. It will start to affect your entire life, impacting your daily actions. This is when treatment is essential.

Severe

Severe symptoms are impacting several daily actions and counseling may not be enough to treat the severity of your symptoms.  Some are so severe that they choose to go to a treatment center, which is a facility that works more intensely on your symptoms. Others seek out professional help by going to therapy.

DBT Skills (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy)

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

Mindfulness

Exercise

Developing skills to manage your symptoms of depression is essential as well as and exploring underlying issues, like anxiety, OCD, phobias, and trauma.

Anxiety relief

These are simply the techniques that I use and find most effective, however, there are a number of other therapeutic techniques and medical interventions. Finding what works best for you is essential for managing symptoms of depression.

1. Find a therapist

2. Develop the skills that aid in working toward your healing.

3. Identify the blocks of those skills and work through them.

4. Work on any underlying issues.
